A Diaspora Buyer’s Guide: How to Buy Property in Owerri From Abroad

A growing share of the buyers we work with aren’t in Nigeria at all, they’re Nigerians in the UK, US, Canada, and elsewhere buying a home or land in Owerri for family, retirement, or investment. Buying remotely is entirely possible, but it does require a few extra safeguards.

Getting your money into Nigeria properly

The Central Bank of Nigeria has, in recent years, pushed to move more diaspora money through official banking channels rather than informal transfer networks, see the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission’s remittance overview for context. Using a licensed transfer operator or your Nigerian bank’s diaspora banking product, rather than a middleman, protects your funds and creates a paper trail that can matter later if a dispute ever arises.

Financing options for diaspora buyers

The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) runs a Diaspora National Housing Fund mortgage specifically for Nigerians abroad, allowing contributions and mortgage access without needing to be physically present in Nigeria. It’s worth investigating alongside straightforward cash purchase, especially for buyers planning ahead rather than buying immediately.

Verifying a property you can’t visit

This is where working with an established local agency matters most. Ask for a video walkthrough, not just photos; ask for the survey plan and title documents before you commit funds, not after; and where possible, have a trusted relative or an independent lawyer physically confirm the property matches what’s been described. Never send a deposit based on WhatsApp photos alone.

Working with an agent you can trust remotely

A good agent will offer video calls, share original (not just photocopied) documents, and be willing to have a lawyer of your choosing review the paperwork not just their own. If an agent resists any of that, treat it as a warning sign, whatever else about the deal looks good.

We regularly support diaspora buyers with video walkthroughs and remote consultations, get in touch to start the conversation, or browse current listings first.
